The most recent winners of the RPS Music Awards were announced at a ceremony at the Dorchester Hotel on Tuesday 8 May 2007.Over three hundred and fifty guests from the music profession attended the ceremony which was hosted by Sean Rafferty and presented by mezzo-soprano, Dame Josephine Barstow. The keynote speech was given by Nicholas Hytner, director of the National Theatre.
The RPS Music Awards are widely recognised as the most prestigious in the field of live classical music. Awards are decided by independent panels consisting of some of the music industry’s most distinguished practitioners. The awards, in 14 categories, honour musicians, composers, writers, broadcasters and inspirational arts organisations for their work in 2006.
Winners included Vladimir Jurowski in the Conductor category, clarinettist Michael Collins, who won the Instrumentalist award, the thrilling John Mark Ainsley scooped the Singer catergory and young soprano Kate Royal received the prestigious Young Artists Award. Britten Sinfonia won the Ensemble award and performed at the end of the evening.
