Out of a gratifyingly rich year of excellent books, television and radio programmes about music, two highly contrasting endeavours stood out for their rigour and communicative energy. But, for its lovingly detailed scholarship and utterly engaging telling of a story, the jury made the award to Patrick Carnegy: Wagner and the Art of the Theatre.
