In a strong field of singers and instrumentalists, the young artist who clearly stood out in 2007 was the Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel, whose dynamic presence and electrifying music-making won the hearts of musicians and audiences alike, in performances with orchestras around the UK and especially with his young compatriots of the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra at the BBC Proms.
